This heart-shaped brooch with its romantic inscription was given as a token of love. It would have been used to fasten a tunic, gown or cloak. Gold was the most costly of metals, generally used only by royalty and the nobility. It is inscribed and would have formerly been enamelled on the reverse in French, in black letter script, ‘Ourselves and all things at your whim’ ('Nostre et tout ditz a vostre desier'). The design on the front of the brooch, possibly stylised leaves and flowers or feathers, would also have been colourfully enamelled.

Ring brooches often fastened garments with a slit at the neck. Both men and women used them. They first pulled the fabric through the ring. They then pushed the pin horizontally through the fabric. When they pulled the fabric back through the ring, it held the pin in place.

An ever popular symbol of love was a heart, either as used as here, the shape of the jewel itself , or as a decorative motif. The inscription on this brooch, meaning 'without being parted' invokes both the themes of fidelity and of love. A brooch was used to fasten a garment, but also symbolically protected the wearer from amatory advances. In this sense brooches might be worn as symbols of fidelity or chastity. Brooches could also be symbols of love and desire. A lady giving her brooch as a love token was a symbol of her accepting the amorous petitions of an admirer.

Ring brooches are the most common type of medieval brooch to survive. Their function was to fasten together fabrics, usually around the neck, and they were generally made as rings, with a long central pin. This example is unusually small, and may have served a decorative rather than practical function. The inscription is obscure: 'mierchi' means grace, or thanks; 'vivort' may be a misliterated word.

Brooches were universally worn during the medieval period, and ring brooches are the most common type of medieval brooch to survive. Their practical function was to fasten garments together, especially at the neck. Shaped as rings, with a long central pin, these brooches varied enormously in size and in decoration. This example is bifaceted, allowing for a line of Latin inscription at the inner and outer face, rather than the more usual type which has an inscription on the front and on the back. The outer facet is inscribed 'IES MI CIN VI', the inner: 'DA VI NII LV'. The meaning of these inscriptions is obscure, and they are not easily translatable.

Pendant reliquary cross
Place of origin:
Germany (possibly, made)
Date:ca. 1450-1475 (made)
Artist/Maker:Unknown
Materials and Techniques:Silver, silver gilt; ruby, sapphire, garnet, pearl

The images decorating the back of this cross were often used as a focus for meditation in the late medieval period. The scenes on the lid show the Instruments of the Passion – scourge, whip, lance, sponge and nails – which were used during the Crucifixion. A tiny fragment of one of them may have formed a relic, stored in the cross's now empty interior. Pearls symbolised purity, and the red gems may have symbolised sacrificial blood shed by Christ.

The jewellery worn in medieval Europe reflected an intensely hierarchical and status-conscious society. Royalty and the nobility wore gold, silver and precious gems. Humbler ranks wore base metals, such as copper or pewter. Colour (provided by precious gems and enamel) and protective power were highly valued.
